Mechanism and thermodynamics of chlorine transfer among organochlorinating agents. Part II. Reversible disproportionation of chloramine-T

Abstract

The pH profiles of the rate of disproportionation of chloramine-T in both directions have been determined in water at 25°. The data obtained are consistent with the reaction mechanisms in both instances in which the chlorinefurnishing species is assumed to be uncharged and the accepting species to be anionic. The equilibrium constant obtained spectrophotometrically both from equilibrium measurements and rate values corresponds to 0·058 compared to the value of 0·061 reported earlier by Soper from solubility determinations.
