Electron spin resonance studies of electron-transfer reactions with aliphatic nitro-compounds in aqueous media

Abstract

The reduction of a number of aliphatic nitro-compounds by electron-transfer from organic donors (e.g., RĊHOH, where R = H or alkyl) in aqueous media, in a flow apparatus, is described. The spectra obtained have been interpreted in terms of ion-pair formation between the radical anion and the electron donor, although, under certain conditions, nitroxide radicals may be formed.
