The crystal structure of trimethyl(salicylaldehydato)platinum(IV)

Abstract

A three-dimensional X-ray crystal structure analysis of (CH3)3(C7H5O2)Pt has been carried out. There are four formula units in a triclinic unit cell having a= 10·828, b= 11·455, c= 9·147 Å, α= 74·7°, β= 110·8°, γ= 92·55° at 115°K and space-group P[1 with combining macron]. The structure was solved from 2137 visually estimated intensities by Patterson and Fourier syntheses and refined by least squares to an R of 0·14. The cell contents are two crystallographically independent, centrosymmetrical dimeric molecules. Both molecules have the same stereochemistry and dimensions. Dimerisation takes place by formation of a four-membered centrosymmetrical [graphic omitted] ring with the phenolic oxygen. Round each platinum atom there are three methyl groups in the cis configuration, Pt–C = 2·03 ± 0·03 Å, two oxygen atoms from a chelate salicylaldehyde, Pt–O = 2·24 ± 0·03 Å, and one bridge oxygen atom with Pt–O′= 2·20 ± 0·03 Å.
