Degradation of molecular vibrational energy in wall collisions

Abstract

Vibrationally excited molecules in the gaseous phase relax to the ground state by the processes of emission, vibrational–translational energy transfer, and energy transfer during wall collisions. A method is described for measuring the efficiencies of wall collisions in degrading particular vibrations. Results are given for the ν3 states of methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide on a surface of polished sodium chloride.
