The thermal unimolecular decomposition of 3-methylcyclohexa-1,4-diene

Abstract

Within the range 291–341 °C the thermal decomposition of 3-methylcyclohexa-1,4-diene in an “aged” reaction vessel is homogeneous, first-order, and yields only toluene and hydrogen. The rate constants, which are independent of pressure from 1 to 25 mm., fit the Arrhenius equation k= 1012·47 exp (–42,950/RT) sec.–1. The results are compared with those for cyclohexa-1,4-diene and 1-methylcyclohexa-1,4-diene.
