Far-infrared (60—4000 cm.–1) and laser-Raman spectra of solid complexes MI2[MCl6](M = Sn and Pb) are reported. Force constants are calculated on the basis of a modified Urey–Bradley force field and show a general decrease with increase in cation size. Some cation lattice modes are reported and found to decrease with increase in cation mass.
