Ethylenediamine and propylenediamine complexes of titanium(III), vanadium(III), and chromium(III)

Abstract

Tiranium, vanadium, and chromium trichlorides react with ethylenediamine (en) and propylenediamine (pn) to yield paramagnetic complexes of the type M en3Cl3 and M pn3Cl3, those in each group being isomorphous with one another. Conductance and infrared studies indicate that all the chlorine atoms are ionic, and hence that the complexes contain tris-bidentate cations. The electronic spectra are discussed and assignments for the ligand-field bands given. The ligand-field strength of propylenediamine is virtually identical with that of ethylenediamine. The magnetic moments and infrared spectra (4000–200 cm.–1) have been recorded and are discussed as well as the e.s.r. spectra of the titanium derivatives.
