Ortho-/pyro- phosphate equilibrium in fused alkali bromide solutions

Abstract

Equilibria have been studied in the reaction: O2–+P2O4–7⇌2PO3–4 in dilute solution in sodium and potassium bromides at temperatures between 900 and 1000°K. A combination of cryoscopic, infra-red transmission, and galvanic cell measurements was used to derive an equilibrium constant for the reaction. By comparing the measurements so obtained with pure liquid standard-state measurements it is concluded that the halide acts essentially as an inert solvent.
