Thermodynamic properties of N-alkane mixtures energy of mixing. Energy of mixing

Abstract

Van Laar and Lorenz established a relation which allows one to calculate the heat of “mixing with zero volume change”. We have extended their result to the mixing of normal alkanes, which is accompanied by a contraction, by interpreting the factor a of the van der Waals equation and by supposing that a pure normal paraffin may be considered for this purpose as a mixture of CH3 and CH2 molecules.
