Galvanic solid-state cells at high pressures

Abstract

The e.m.f. of the solid state cell Pb/PbCl2| AgCl/Ag has been studied at 1.5–45 kb and at 250–291°C. The cell gave a pressure coefficient of e.m.f. in agreement with the reaction volume change up to a pressure of 15 kb, but above this pressure the apparent e.m.f. fell with increasing pressure. Variations of the cell with doped electrolytes and with components preformed by electrolysis, for which the fall in e.m.f. above 15 kb was much reduced, are described and discussed in terms of the relative contributions of ionic and electronic conductivity.
