Association and dissociation in the electrochemical diffuse layer

Abstract

A local thermodynamical investigation of the real dissociation constant K in the diffuse layer shows that it is theoretically possible to calculate the ratio K/K′, where K′ is the dissociation constant in the bulk phase. This ratio is a function of the field intensity. According to the values of the polarization terms and of the molar volumes of the components, the dissociation constant K in the double layer can be greater, equal or smaller than the one in the bulk.
