Effect of the dissociation of water on electrochemical studies involving hydrogen ions

Abstract

Electrochemical studies of acids in water may be complicated by the fact that the solvent itself can dissociate into hydronium and hydroxide ions. This paper examines the effect of this dissociation both for strong and weak acids, and shows that it is only important when the pK of the acid is greater than 9 or when the acid concentration is very small (∼10–4mole l.–1).
