Rate parameters for reaction of atomic selenium with ethylene

Abstract

Atomic selenium was monitored in flashed CSe2 by kinetic absorption spectroscopy, and its rate of reaction with ethylene was measured in the temperature range 302–412°K. The rate of appearance of a new spectrum in the far ultra-violet was symmetrical with the atomic decay, and was tentatively assigned to ethylene selenide. The rate constants were expressed as k= 1.8±0.60×10–11 exp (–2810±200 (cal)/RT)cm3 sec–1 molecule–1. Ethylene was shown to be a very efficient third body for atomic selenium recombination, apparently because of a fast abstraction of the selenium atom from ethylene selenide to regenerate ethylene. A number of olefin selenide spectra were listed.
