Reactions of trifluoromethyl radicals with organic halides. Part2.—Aromatic halides

Abstract

The reactions of CF3 radicals with halobenzenes and toluenes in the vapour phase have been studied. Data were obtained on the Arrhenius parameters for the addition of CF3 to the aromatic ring. Hydrogen and halogen abstraction by CF3 were also studied and it was found that the ease of abstraction was in the order I>H>Br>Cl. It is proposed that halogen abstraction from the ring occurs via an addition complex, i.e.,CF3+ArX→CF3ArX CF3+CF3ArX → CF3X+ArCF3. With C6F5I, there is evidence that CF3 addition becomes reversible at higher temperatures.
