Reactions of trifluoromethyl radicals with organic halides. Part2.—Aromatic halides

Abstract

The reactions of CF₃ radicals with halobenzenes and toluenes in the vapour phase have been studied. Data were obtained on the Arrhenius parameters for the addition of CF₃ to the aromatic ring. Hydrogen and halogen abstraction by CF₃ were also studied and it was found that the ease of abstraction was in the order I>H>Br>Cl. It is proposed that halogen abstraction from the ring occurs via an addition complex, i.e.,CF₃+ArX→CF₃ArX CF₃+CF₃ArX → CF₃X+ArCF₃. With C₆F₅I, there is evidence that CF₃ addition becomes reversible at higher temperatures.
