The synthesis of 14C-labelled bipyridylium salts

Abstract

[2,3-14C2]Pyridine has been prepared from [1,2-14C2]acetylene and converted into the corresponding [14C4]2,2′- and [14C4]4,4′-bipyridyls. NN′-Ethylene-[14C4]2,2′-bipyridylium dibromide and NN′-dimethyl-[14C4]4,4′-bipyridylium dichloride and di(methyl sulphate), which possess herbicidal activity, have been prepared for biological tracer studies.
