Viridin. Part IV. Total synthesis of a tetracyclic C16 degradation product

Abstract

Syntheses of three methylcyclopentanaphtho[2,3-b]furans are described. The identity of one of them with a C16H16O degradation product of viridin reveals the nature of the tetracyclic system present in the C17 product of oxidation of viridin with hydrogen peroxide.
