New derivatives of 3-methylpurine

Abstract

3-Methyl-8-phenylpurine has been obtained as picrate and 3-methyl-8-(3-pyridyl)purine as free base. In contrast, attempts to dethiate 3-methyl-6-methylthiopurine or to dehalogenate 6-chloro-3-methylpurine to 3-methylpurine failed. In 6-chloro-3-methylpurine and its 8-phenyl derivative the halogen possesses marked reactivity. These chloro-compounds serve, therefore, for the synthesis of a variety of new purines.
