Electron spin resonance studies of oxidation. Part VIII. Elimination reactions of some hydroxyalkyl radicals

Abstract

The electron spin resonance spectra of radicals generated by the one-electron oxidation of some diols and related compounds are described and discussed. Evidence is adduced that radicals of the type HO–Ċ[graphic omited]–C[graphic omited]–X, where X is a good leaving-group, readily undergo elimination to give O[double bond, length half m-dash]C[graphic omited]–Ċ[double bond splayed right]. The spectrum of the radical ·CH2CHO is discussed.
