Quantitative aspects of Lewis acidity. Part V. The effect of solvent on Lewis acidity

Abstract

Equilibrium constants for the formation of 1:1 adducts between stannic halides and various anilines in three solvents are reported. Combination of present and previous data leads to some generalisations about the effect of solvent on Lewis acidity. The change in acidity produced by a change of solvent is largest for the strongest acids, and, of two solvents, that which leads to the lower general level of acidity leads also to a smaller difference in acidity between any two acids. A thermodynamic explanation is offered.
