The circular dichroism of complexes of palladium containing an optically active unidentate ligand

Abstract

The electronic absorption spectra and the associated circular dichroism of the complexes trans-[PdCl2(–)am2] and trans-[PdCl4(–)am2](am = 1-phenylethylamine), [α]D=–39°, have been measured in order to ascertain the effect of a distant asymmetric centre upon the circular dichroism of the dd transitions of these complexes. All the dd transitions show marked rotational strength, and this observation is discussed in relation to the models proposed for the appearance of optical activity in the dd bands of dissymmetric transition-metal ions.
