The circular dichroism of complexes of palladium containing an optically active unidentate ligand
Abstract
The electronic absorption spectra and the associated circular dichroism of the complexes trans-[PdCl2(–)am2] and trans-[PdCl4(–)am2](am = 1-phenylethylamine), [α]D=–39°, have been measured in order to ascertain the effect of a distant asymmetric centre upon the circular dichroism of the d→d transitions of these complexes. All the d→d transitions show marked rotational strength, and this observation is discussed in relation to the models proposed for the appearance of optical activity in the d→d bands of dissymmetric transition-metal ions.
