Pentafluorophenyl derivatives of transition metals. Part V. Bis-(π-cyclopentadienyl)bis-(σ-pentafluorophenyl)zirconium and related studies

Abstract

Treatment of bis-(π-cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride with pentafluorophenyl-lithium affords (π-C5H5)2Zr(σ-C6F5)2, a complex less chemically robust than the titanium analogue, (π-C5H5)2Ti(σ-C6F5)2. Bis-(π-cyclopentadienyl)bis-(σ-pentafluorophenyl)zirconium readily hydrolyses, giving (π-C5H5)2Zr(σ-C6F5)OH, and ultimately (π-C5H5)2Zr(OH)2.

Further studies on the titanium compound, (π-C5H5)2Ti(σ-C6F5)2, have shown that the C6F5 groups are cleaved by methyl-lithium or by the sodium salt of methanethiol. The latter reagent affords (π-C5H5)2Ti(SCH3)2, and similar compounds from dithiols have been prepared. The synthesis of pentacarbonyl(pentafluorobenzoyl)-manganese is also described.
