Octahedral cobalt(III) complexes of the chloropentammine type. Part V. The preparation and properties of some co-ordination compounds of cobalt(III) containing halogen derivatives of primary aliphatic amines as ligands

Abstract

The synthesis of one isomeric series of salts is described for complex cations of the type [Co en2(X-RNH2)Y]2+ where en represents ethylenediamine, X-RNH2 represents a chloro- or bromo-derivative of ethylamine or n-propylamine, and Y = Cl or Br. The visible absorption spectra of all these compounds are reported, together with some of the infrared absorption bands. Based on this evidence, the complexes are assigned the cis configuration. Aquo-complexes of the type cis-[Co en2(X-RNH2)(H2O)](NO3)3 are obtained as orange-red crystals from the corresponding chloro-complexes by the action of mercury(II) nitrate in nitric acid. The absorption spectra of these aquo-complexes are briefly discussed.
