Nephelauxetic parameters in the spectra of lanthanide(III) complexes

Abstract

A statistical analysis is applied to the calculation of the nephelauxetic parameter dβ which has been used in the interpretation of the ff spectra of tervalent lanthanides. It is concluded that data of ordinary accuracy do not yield very significant estimates of dβ or of the ground-state stabilisation dσ. Both practical and theoretical difficulties are involved.
