Tetraethylammonium tetrahalogenozincate(II) complexes with mixed halide ligands

Abstract

The complexes (Et₄N)₂ZnBr_nCl_{4 –n}, (Et₄N)₂ZnBr_nI_{4 –n}(n= 1, 2, or 3), (Et₄N)₂ZnCl₂I₂, and (Et₄N)₂ZnClI₃ have been prepared, but (Et₄N)₂ZnCl₃I could not be characterised. X-Ray powder photography has shown that the bromochloro-complexes have structures similar to (Et₄N)₂ZnCl₄ and (Et₄N)₂ZnBr₄ but not to (Et₄N)₂ZnI₄, while the bromoiodo-complexes and (Et₄N)₂ZnClI₃ have structures similar to (Et₄N)₂ZnI₄. The infrared spectra (3100–2800 and 2000-750 cm.^–1) of the complexes (Et₄N)₂ZnBr_nCl_{4 –n}(n= 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4) differ significantly from those of the iodo-complexes.
