Lithium in Chile: Present Status and Future Outlook
Abstract
An overview of the current state of lithium in Chile, including a forward-looking assessment in light of the ongoing National Lithium Strategy is provided. Recognizing lithium’s significance as an energy resource, we examine its global and regional status. Furthermore, we analyze the evolution of Chile’s lithium industry, focusing on two key recent public policy initiatives: the 2015 report of the National Lithium Commission and the recently introduced National Lithium Strategy, outlining their salient features. Additionally, we review material science research conducted in Chile since the 1960s concerning the physical chemistry of lithium and brines. Finally, the paper argues that lithium, as a pivotal material in transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy, could strategically contribute to sovereign technological development.
