Metal–organic frameworks and their derivatives as electrode materials for Li-ion batteries: a mini review

Abstract

In the recent decades, in order to obtain more excellent performance and a wider range of applications of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), researchers have explored potential electrode materials. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) possess attractive features, such as large surface area, high porosity, tunable three-dimensional porous frameworks, and redox activity, making them a promising electrode material for LIBs. In this paper, we introduce the research progress on using MOFs directly as anode materials and cathode materials for LIBs. Subsequently, we mainly summarize the synthesis methods, structures and electrochemical properties of MOF-derived materials (porous carbon materials, single metal oxides, phosphides, LiCoO2, transition metal fluorides, etc.) used in lithium-ion battery electrode materials. Finally, the development trend of MOFs and derived materials as electrode materials for LIBs is proposed, and some ideas and suggestions for the next development and promotion of new electrode materials are provided.
