Boosting nitrate electroreduction to ammonia on NbOxvia constructing oxygen vacancies

Abstract

We have synthesized NbOx with oxygen vacancies (OVs) and conducted the first work on nitrate electroreduction to NH3 over Nb oxides. It is a robust non-precious metal catalyst for NH3 synthesis by nitrate electroreduction. The faradaic efficiency of 94.5% and the NH3 formation rate of 55.0 μg h−1 mgcat−1 were achieved in a neutral electrolyte. The excellent performance of NbOx originates from the intrinsic properties of Nb oxides and the OVs in the catalyst.
