N.m.r. study of dimerization in aqueous solutions of sodium salicylate

Abstract

N.m.r. measurements were carried out on aqueous solutions of ortho, meta and para-hydroxybenzoate ions. Only the ortho isomer, salicylate, gave evidence for specific dimer formation in the ground state. From the concentration dependence of the chemical shifts of particular protons a π-bonded structure is derived for the dimer.
