Activation of alkanes involving rhenium atoms: synthesis and electronic structure of binuclear µ-alkylidene derivatives; molecular structure of [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHBut)(µ-H)2]
Abstract
Co-condensation of rhenium atoms with a mixture of benzene and alkanes (neopentane, ethane, propane, butane, 2-methylpropane, tetramethylsilane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, or cyclopropane) gives the compounds: [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHBut)(µ-H)2]; [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHMe)(µ-H)2]; [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHEt)(µ-H)2] and [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CMe2)(µ-H)2]; [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHPrn)(µ-H)2] and [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CMeEt)(µ-H)2]; [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHCHMe2)(µ-H)2]; [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHSiMe3)(µ-H)2]; [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-C[CH2]4)(µ-H)2]; [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-C[CH2]5)(µ-H)2]; and [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHCHCH2)(µ-H)2] and [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHEt)(µ-H)2] respectively. The crystal structure of [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHBut)(µ-H)2] has been determined. Co-condensation of rhenium atoms with a mixture of [2H6]benzene and neopentane gives [{Re(η-C6D6)}2(µ-CHBut)(µ-H)2]. The He I and He II photoelectron spectra of [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHBut)(µ-H)2] are reported. Assignment of the photoelectron spectra and an analysis of the bonding in [{Re(η-C6H6)}2(µ-CHBut)(µ-H)2] is described based on the results of extended-Hückel calculations.
