Ultrashort and metastable doping of the ZnO surface by photoexcited defects

We show exemplarily for the ZnO surface that photoexcited deep defects act like chemically doped shallow donors in semiconductors. Sufficiently strong “photodoping” makes ZnO a transient metal with influenceable ultrashort to metastable lifetimes.

About this collection

We are delighted to share with you a selection of the papers associated with a Faraday Discussion on From optical to THz control of materials. More information about the related event may be found here: http://rsc.li/control-fd2022. Additional articles will be added to the collection as they are published. The final versions of all the articles presented and a record of the discussions will be published after the event.

Ultrafast science has been for long limited to the investigation of molecular processes. Over the past 10 years, investigation of ultrafast processes has expanded to material science, with specific aspects related to solid-state like excitation of electron in band structures, collective phonon excitation, or specific probes for electronic and structural reorganization such as X-ray diffraction or ARPES. The meeting will cover 4 main themes: Material science: ultrafast transformation, electron-phonon coupling, multi-scale aspects, Theory of out of equilibrium light-induced phenomena, Optical excitation processes and THz and laser field excitation processes.

On behalf of the Scientific Committee, we hope you join us and participate in this exciting event, and that you enjoy these articles and the record of the discussion.
