CO2 electoreduction reaction on heteroatom-doped carbon cathode materials

Abstract

The CO2 electrochemical reduction reaction (CERR) is a potential CO2 conversion method since it reduces CO2 to useful fuels and chemicals with the feasible and clean harnessing of electrons. The properties of the cathode material used in CERR is the determining factor in controlling the activity, selectivity and stability of the reaction. Compared with metal cathode catalysts, which have been extensively studied, metal-free carbon materials are emerging as highly promising alternatives due to their controllable composition, favorable energy efficiency, and excellent stability. In addition, the heteroatom doping can further tune the electroactivity of the nanostructured carbon cathode in CERR. This highlight summarizes the recent developments of heteroatom-doped carbon cathode catalysts for CERR. Not only are the preparation method and performance of the doped carbon materials discussed in detail, but so are the active center and related mechanisms in CERR.
