Ball-milling promoted ring-opening xanthylation of cyclic sulfonium salts

Abstract

A sustainable and practical method for ball-milling-promoted ring-opening xanthylation of cyclic sulfonium salts has been successfully developed. This protocol allows for the efficient synthesis of diverse sulfur-containing alkyl xanthates under ambient conditions, demonstrating broad substrate scope and good functional group compatibility. Notably, the reaction features a short reaction time, ranging from 10 to 15 minutes. Moreover, the process does not require the addition of catalysts, oxidants, or additives, making this method highly efficient and environmentally benign, aligning well with green and sustainable chemistry.
