The effect of non-intrinsic factors on pulse discharge and energy releasing performance of dielectric ceramics

Abstract

Power pulse ceramic capacitors are widely used in pulse generators and other fields because of their excellent charge and discharge performance. In this work, 0.55Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3–0.45Ba0.85Ca0.15Ti0.85Zr0.1Sn0.05O3(0.55NBT–0.45BCZTS) relaxor ferroelectric ceramics were manufactured using the solid-state reaction method. The charge and discharge properties of 0.55NBT–0.45BCZTS relaxor ferroelectric ceramics with different electrode areas and dielectric thicknesses were measured under the same electric field. The shape of the ceramic capacitor is related to its static capacitance value. As the static capacitance value changes, the charge and discharge performance of the sample presents different laws. Additionally, the charge and discharge performance of the sample is also affected by the resistance and inductance of the RLC circuit. These non-intrinsic factors seriously affect the characterization of charge and discharge performance of power pulse ceramic capacitors. Presently, a unified standard for the charge and discharge test of ceramic capacitors is needed. To standardize the charge and discharge test, avoid the non-intrinsic factors and better compare the charge and discharge performances of different materials, we suggest that the sample for charge and discharge tests should be set with a thickness of 0.03 cm, an electrode diameter of 0.4 cm, an RLC circuit resistance of 100 Ω and an inductance of 2 μH.
