Oxide chlorides of tungsten and molybdenum. Part I. Preparations of some lower-valency oxide halides

Abstract

Reduction of the oxide halides MoOCl4, MoO2Cl2, WOCl4, and WO2Cl2 with HI, C6H6, C6H5Cl, and Al powder leads to the new compounds WOCl2 and MoO2Cl, and to MoOCl3, MoOCl2, and WOCl3. WOCl2 is isostructural with MoOCl2; molybdenum oxide trichloride, MoOCl3, exists in tetragonal and monoclinic forms; the former is isostructural with NbOCl3.
