The effect of methacrylic acid in smooth coatings on dTHP1 and HUVEC gene expression

Forty percent (but not 20%) methacrylic acid in smooth copolymer films resulted in increased expression of inflammatory and angiogenic genes in dTHP1 cells and migratory genes in HUVEC.

Sub-100 nm patterning of TiO2 film for the regulation of endothelial and smooth muscle cell functions

A sub-100 nm nano-imprinted TiO2 layer significantly inhibited the proliferation of SMCs and increased the proliferation of HUVECs. Focal adhesions size, density and distribution were significantly modulated by nano-imprinted TiO2.

Vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in modular collagen–fibrin microtissues

Vessel networks can be generated within modular protein microbeads containing endothelial cells and fibroblasts. Embedding these microtissues in a surrounding matrix emulates aspects of new blood vessel formation, a process that is critical in tissue development, remodeling, and regeneration.

Elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) coatings have been shown to have non-thrombogenic properties. We expand our understanding of this phenomenon here by investigating the interaction of these coatings with leukocytes.

We are delighted to introduce this collection of articles specially commissioned to mark Michael Sefton’s 65th birthday.

Michael Sefton, University of Toronto, is recognized for seminal contributions to biomaterials science, regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, for development of novel methods for diabetes treatment and for visionary international leadership of the field of biomedical engineering. He has been a leader in the fields of biomaterials, regenerative medicine and tissue engineering for the past 40 years and a source of inspiration for several generations of biomaterials scientists, biomedical engineers, chemical engineers and polymer scientists.
