CHAPTER 7

Microelectronic Devices Based on Nanomaterial-Carrier Cells

Cells, as a basic unit of life offer the complete spectrum of biological processes required to sustain the existence of living organisms. In combination with nanomaterials, cell-based electronic (or electrical) devices are being developed by coupling these biological systems with an electronic interface. Such cyborg systems currently in their preliminary stages, are being used to detect in real time specific cellular responses. This chapter focuses specifically on devices where the cells activity (both passive and active) is used to modulate currents in a coupled nanomaterial interface. The different strategies being used to assembly these devices, their response characteristics and the challenges and future prospects are also discussed.
