In this chapter, perfluorinated ionomers and ionomer membranes for the chlor-alkali process and polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) are reviewed. First, the fundamental manufacturing technologies such as monomer syntheses, polymer syntheses, ion exchange and fabrication are explained. Then, the fundamentals of PEFC technologies for designing their ionomers are described, followed by the characteristic requirements. Finally, some examples are summarized for each approach, corresponding to the aforementioned requirements, such as proton conductivity, chemical stability, mechanical stability and oxygen permeability.
