Solvent effects on the assembly of Ni/Na coordination polymers from reactions of [Ni(acac)2(H2O)2] with sodium dicyanamide

Abstract

Reaction of a preformed complex [Ni(acac)2(H2O)2] (acac = acetylacetonate) (1) with sodium dicyanamide (dca) in DMF/acetone gave rise to [Ni(acac)2Na2(dca)2(μ-DMF)2]n (2) while analogous reaction of 1 with Na(dca) in MeCNMeOH formed [Ni(acac)2Na(dca)(MeCN)]n (3). Compound 2 consists of 1D [(acac)2Ni(Na-μ-DMF)2Ni(acac)2]n2n+ cationic zigzag chains that are interlinked by dca anions to produce a 2D network with a Schläfli symbol (4·62)3(42·62)4. Compound 3 contains the cationic [Ni(acac)2Na(MeCN)]nn+ chains that are interconnected by dca anions to form a 3D net with a Schläfli symbol 42·84. Solvent effects may be attributed to the remarkable structural differences of 2 and 3. Magnetic studies revealed that 2 and 3 possess the ferromagnetic interactions between paramagnetic Ni(II) ions.
