The counterion as a useful tool to obtain complexes of cytosine with alkali metal ions

Abstract

Two new sodium cytosine compounds, showing an unprecedented coordination of the nucleobase, have been synthesized from aqueous solutions containing perchlorate ions; whereas attempts to obtain similar complexes with Cl, Br, NO3, SO42−, PF6, CF3SO3 as counterions failed, using sodium tetrafluoroborate a hemiprotonated species, without Na+ cations, was obtained.
