The highly preorganised ‘cyclocholamide’ 12 serves as prototype for a new series of receptors 4 bearing inward-directed polar functional groups; 12 has been synthesized by cyclotrimerisation of a monomer unit, and also by a stepwise route adaptable to the preparation of non-C3-symmetrical analogues.
