Temperature dependence of the reaction of the nitrate radical with but-1-ene

Abstract

The rate coefficient for the reaction of NO3 with but-1-ene has been measured by the discharge-flow technique coupled to detection of NO3 by optical absorption. The value of the rate coefficient at room temperature was 1.1 × 10–14 cm3 molecule–1 s–1 and the derived Arrhenius expression is 2.5 × 10–13 exp(–940/T) cm3 molecule–1 s–1. The reactivity is discussed in terms of the structure of the organic reactant and its molecular polarizability. The implications of the results of this work for the atmospheric lifetime of but-1-ene, with respect to the reactions with both NO3 and OH, are discussed briefly.
