Generation of a volatile cadmium species in an organic medium

Abstract

The generation of a cadmium species (presumed to be a hydride) in DMF is studied. The procedure consists of adding 3 ml of a 7% NaBH4 solution in DMF to 2 ml of a solution of Cd (0.120 µg) in DMF in an acidic medium (2 ml of 1.8 M HCl in DMF), in the presence of diethyldithiocarbamate. The volatile compound formed is carried by N2 to the quartz tube of an atomic absorption spectrometer. The role of the diethyldithiocarbamate and the experimental conditions for generating the cadmium hydride are studied. The characteristic mass of Cd is 2.6 ng and the RSD is 2.9%.
