The 1-azabicyclo[4.4.4]tetradec-6-yl radical: evidence that three-electron C· : N bonding in a neutral radical is very weak

Abstract

The title radical has been generated by γ-radiolysis of 1-azoniatricyclo[4.4.4.01,6]tetradecane tetrafluoroborate and shows hyperfine coupling to three hydrogens, A= 24 G (G = 10–4T), but AN is small, <8 G; this shows that the spin density on nitrogen is no more than 5% and indicates very weak three-electron bonding.
