Isotopic effects on the tracer diffusion of water, methanol and ethanol dissolved in carbon tetrachloride at 25 °C

Abstract

An experimental search has been made for isotopic mass effects on the tracer diffusion of water, methanol and ethanol dissolved in carbon tetrachloride. No effect has been observed within the experimental precision of ca. 0.5%. The tracer-diffusion coefficients of water and methanol are compared with data on the rotational motion of these molecules at high dilution in CCl4, as reported in the recent literature. Upon dilution in CCl4 the barriers which impede rotational motion are removed, but the translational motion is not accelerated.
