The action of the di(bromomagnesio)alkanes BrMg[CH2]4MgBr and BrMg[CH2]5MgBr on γ- and δ-lactones leads, after cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl annelation, to the formation of 1-(3-hydroxyalkyl)- and 1-(4-hydroxyalkyl)-cycloalkanols.
