The effects of Eu(fod)3 on the 1H n.m.r. spectra of 22 coumarins with alkyl, alkoxy, furano, and pyrano substituents and of coumarin itself have been studied, and a method for obtaining information on the substitution pattern of the coumarins has been developed.
