Temperature dependence of the low frequency dielectric dispersion in the perylene + chloranil complex

Abstract

The dielectric properties of various samples of the polycrystalline perylene + chloranil complex have been studied over the frequency range 10–4 to 105 Hz for temperatures between 190 and 320 K. A reproducible dipolar-type dispersion is observed at sub-hertz frequencies confirming the results of earlier work. An interpretation in terms of a mechanism involving the activated hopping of electrons between trapping sites is consistent with the observed results. An analysis of the effect as a function of temperature is considered to lead to knowledge of the energy distribution of the electron trapping sites.
