Relaxation in hydrogen-bonded liquids studied by dielectric and Kerr-effect techniques
Abstract
Comparative dielectric and dynamic Kerr-effect studies have been made on 6-methyl-3-heptanol, dipropylene glycol, 2,4-pentanediol and 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol in the liquid state over a wide range of frequency and temperature. The relaxations in each liquid are considered in terms of auto- and cross-correlation functions for group motions and specific mechanisms for those motions. Whilst interpretations are possible for 6-methyl-3-heptanol, dipropylene glycol and 2-ethylhexanediol, the behaviour of 2,4-pentanediol is anomalous, being probably due to the additional effects of intramolecular hydrogen-bonding.
