Kinetics of the bromate–iodide and iodate–iodide reactions by pH-stat techniques

Abstract

Buffer-free pH-stat methods were applied to kinetic investigations of the iodate–iodide and bromate–iodide reactions in the pH range 3–4 yielding the rate laws v′=k0[H+]2[I]2[IO3] and v=k0[H+]2[I][BrO3]+k1[H+][I][BrO3]. In addition, for [I] and [IO3] of the order of 10–2M(M= mol dm–3) the rate of reaction was 4th order in [I], 2nd order in [IO3], and the order with respect to [H+] increased from 1st towards 3rd as [H+] decreased from 8 × 10–7M to 4 × 10–8M.
