Reactions of alkanes on platinum–tin and platinum–rhodium alloy films

Abstract

The reactions of n-hexane and n-pentane in excess hydrogen on evaporated films of Pt–Sn and Pt–Rh have been studied. The methods of film preparation and characterization are described. Hydrogenolysis selectivities with both hydrocarbons on Pt–Sn alloys decreased markedly with increase of tin content. For Pt–Rh, increase of Rh content caused a regular increase in hydrogenolysis selectivity. 1,5-Cyclization selectivity patterns are interpreted in terms of the change in active site (Pt) number and the possibly modified bonding capability of carbided surfaces for hydrocarbon intermediates.
